recently, the corporate junk magazine devoted an entire printing to another bullshit list, this time of the greatest guitarists. which is all subjective due to preference and taste and the fucking fact, that its never a contest…

but i digress…

what the stone should have done was say, the greatest 100 guitarists, and then left it at number one. HENDRIX. just say hendrix and then have 110 pages of articles and photos of him. dont overblow the whole thing putting kurt cobain in there in the top 10, when, as amazing a songwriter and frontman and importance he was, a guitar playing great, cmon!? dont mention clapton and strummer but not mention or rank countless others that were/are more amazing than these. the whole thing is a mundane excuse to rank your favorites and to cause some discussion. well its not worth discussing (as i am discussing it) say hendrix. and move on.   

sure there are different styles and different tactics. sure there are different camps of belief and method. but the man transcended all of this, and thats why he is legendary.

lists of everything have to fucking stop. it gets us nowhere. it is the lowest common form of journalism. “bb king is great.” picture. blurb. “jimmy page” is great. picture. blurb. “WAIT! why is kirk hammett soooo low?” “where is dimebag?” “malmsteen?” its fucking ludicrisp. banality at its finest.

heres a fucking list. top 10 worst supposed rock magazines. you know the ones that for a fucking years end list of best albums, have, instead of a photo of the winners of said list, a picture of brad pitt on the cover instead. we know it sells magazines. to young girls. but at what cost? a music magazine, that is now more a culture magazine… kinda reminds me of a certain music channel… the intention was great, but apparently in this world of upheaval, a cover with tv on the radio, wont sell as well as another cover with brad pitt on it. who we’ve all seen a million times. and i wont even begin to speak of their new one with an imaginary exit interview with bush. seems like the whole staff from jan wenner all the way down to the mailroom guy need replacing, because theyre doing the world an injustice.
